Durham City Councilor To Spend Time In Jail

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham City Council member is going to jail for failing to make several months worth of alimony and child support payments.

John Best will spend the next two Saturday nights behind bars with another 28 days of jail time suspended.

A Durham County judge also put him on probation for two years, saying it was the most lenient sentence she could give under the circumstances.

Best's ex-wife claims he is thousands of dollars behind in a divorce settlement.

Best works three part-time jobs including the City Council and claims he cannot make full payments because of a bad economy.
