Five Airmen Receive Silver Stars

POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. — The head of the Air Force gave five local airmen one of the highest honors in the military.

Secretary James Roche awarded the airmen Silver Stars for bravery during combat.

  • Lt. Col. James Fairchild flew dangerously low to protect U.S. troops on the ground.
  • Sgt. Eric Brandenburg, Jr. faced 300 rounds over eight hours.
  • Sgt. Jason Quesenberry treated others while he bled heavily.
  • Sgt. Thomas Case tore through shrapnel to help his unit.
  • Sgt. Michael Shropshire killed three enemy soldiers, one right in front of him.
  • The Silver Star is the third highest medal of valor in the military. One must show exceptional bravery in a combat situation to earn one.
