DURHAM, N.C. — Negotiations started Friday between the city of Durham and the family of a teenager killed in an accident caused by an officer.

Last July, Matthew West died when Durham police Officer Alfred Rodriguez ran a flashing red light and hit a Jeep West was riding in.

A judge ordered Rodriguez to pay a $100 fine under a plea agreement. He later resigned from the police department.

West's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city. Leaders do not dispute responsibility. The lawsuit does not specify any dollar amount for damages.
