DURHAM, N.C. — The defense can begin presenting its side Friday in the trial of a man accused of murdering an 89-year-old Durham County woman.

The prosecution in the Michael Sullivan murder trial rested late Thursday.

Sullivan is accused of shooting Lois Cannady outside her home more than two years ago.

Cannady was on the phone with a 911 operator when she was shot with an assault rifle. During the prosecution's portion of the trial, sheriff's Detective Robert Cox told jurors Wednesday that Sullivan admitted he was in Cannady's home the night she died.

If convicted, Sullivan will get an automatic life sentence.
