Passaro To Stay In Jail

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A local man accused of beating an Afghan prisoner will stay in jail for now.

Former CIA contractor David Passaro is charged with beating a prisoner in Afghanistan. The prisoner died two days later.

Tuesday in Raleigh, a federal judge ordered Passaro to stay in the Wake County Jail.

Friends were hoping he would be released. But the judge wants him to stay locked up while he considers putting Passaro in a halfway house.

That decision isn't expected for at least five days.

Prosecutors argued in federal court Tuesday that Passaro is a flight risk.

At Tuesday's detention hearing, prosecutors said deputies seized $8,000 in cash in a Ziploc bag and weapons from the home of Bonnie Heart, Passaro's girlfriend. Prosecutors said he might try to flee with the help of Heart, who is a Wake Forest Police detective currently on unpaid leave.
