Former Miss Raleigh Moves Step Closer To Political Office

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A former beauty queen who used to act like she was in politics is one step closer to the real thing.

Beth Troutman, of Concord, defeated Mark Ortiz in the Democratic primary for the 8th Congressional district seat.

Troutman faces Rep. Robin Hayes -- a three-term Republican -- in November.

Troutman, 27, was crowned Miss Raleigh in 1999. She spent the past four years in Los Angeles working in the "The West Wing" production office.
