NEWTON, N.C. — A Fayetteville man is dead after a tree fell on him while he was playing golf.
William Harrell was on a Catawba County golf course, between holes No. 7 and No. 8, when the tree fell on his cart.
An official with the sheriff's office said the tree was rotten and that strong winds blew it over.
Ray Nicholson, also of Fayetteville, survived with minor injuries.
Investigators said the tree was about 35 feet tall and apparently had rotted under ground before strong winds toppled it. Workers had to saw the tree off the cart to get to the victims.
