Henderson Pet Food Plant Burns For Second Time In Month

Posted Updated

HENDERSON, N.C. — A fire at the IAMS pet food plant Tuesday afternoon has been put out. It was the second fire at the plant in two weeks.

Officials said the fire occurred about 1:30 p.m. in a large dryer unit. Authorities said there were no injuries, and almost 100 employees were evacuated safely.

"I just thank God that no one was hurt and everything worked out for the best," employee Patty Meadows said.

The plant had been the scene of a fire on June 30. That fire broke out around 11 p.m and continued burning until 3:50 a.m. the next day. About 50 employees were evacuated while crews worked to put the fire out. No one was injured.

On Tuesday, the plant manager said there was a fire at the same plant a year ago caused by a backup of byproducts in the system. Investigators said they are trying to determine the cause of both fires.

Tuesday's fire at the plant occurred in a different part of the same building as the previous fire.
