DOT Reopens Stretch of I-40 Following Weekend Work, Traffic Jams

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A stretch of road in Durham that turned part of Interstate 40 into a parking lot over the weekend is open.

State Department of Transportation crews brought I-40 down to one lane between the Durham Freeway and Highway 55. The gridlock stretched for miles Saturday morning and lasted most of the afternoon.

Crews spent Sunday night moving barrels, preparing for a lane shift. After midnight, they opened a second lane.

Interstate 40 westbound traffic will flow on the inner shoulder and the first lane, while construction crews work to widen the outer section between the Durham Freeway and Highway 55.

All westbound ramps at the Durham Freeway are closed except for the 147 North exit. They will remain closed for about two months.
