Durham Panhandling Ban Set To Go Into Effect

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — There will not be any more panhandling at night on Durham streets. The city's new ban takes effect Thursday night.

The ban makes any begging between sunset and sunrise illegal and a misdemeanor.

Council members say it is an effort to keep downtown visitors safer. In 2002, the city banned collecting money at intersections.

It was aimed at panhandlers, but it made it illegal for groups, including firefighters and newspaper vendors to do business on roadways.
