HENDERSON, N.C. — A Henderson man is behind bars in connection with a shooting Thursday at a local convenience store.

"Many of the neighbors in that area are coming forward and being very helpful in the investigation. And that's critical to getting this case closed," he said.

Alsad has owned the store for almost two years.

Salah Hauter runs a convenience store across the street from Community Mart. He says he has been robbed twice.

"Usually we'll be busy. At this time of month, everybody has checks. They've got money," Hauter said.

Neighbors describe the store owner as a kind and generous man who rarely refused a favor.

"I shop here a lot. I can't understand why anyone would want to harm this man," customer Thurmond Jeffries said.

Alsad is married with five children.
