Warren teen injured in hit-and-run dies

Cody Flowers, 15, suffered several skull fractures and a broken right arm in the Saturday night incident and had been in a medically induced coma at Duke University Hospital in Durham.

"Cody had so much love in his heart for his friends, and so I'm really hoping that they stick with me right now and be with me to do this," Flowers' mother, Susan Walker, said Wednesday.

Investigators said Flowers was walking along northbound U.S. Highway 1, returning home from a friend's house, when a vehicle crossed the center line, struck him and didn't stop, leaving him on the side of the highway.

"The individual who did this had no remorse, had no feelings," Walker said as she clutched the clothes her son was wearing when he was hit. "I'm not even going to think about how I feel right now because Cody wouldn't want it that way."

Residents in the area reported hearing a loud noise, and when they checked, found Flowers near the roadside. They said they didn't see what kind of vehicle hit the teen but noted that the driver-side mirror was at the wreck site.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has searched a vehicle it believes was involved in the hit-and-run, authorities said, but no charges have been filed.

"If you could see this child and what you've done to his family, you would turn yourself in," family friend Tammy Krupa said.

Friends nailed an "RIP Cody" sign to a nearby tree Wednesday, and they planned to hold a vigil for him Wednesday evening.

"To hit him and leave him there, like it was nothing (is awful)," family friend Lisa Norwood said. "He's something. I mean, he was very special."
