RALEIGH, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation is offering an apology for major traffic backups that occurred on Interstate 540 over the weekend.

Crews blocked ramps to put down the final layer of pavement that will link Capital Boulevard with the new section of I-540.

The gridlock stretched for two miles and DOT said it will not happen again.

The next I-540 section from Capital Boulevard to the Highway 64 Bypass in Knightdale is set to open next month.
