New Chief Jailer Named At Cumberland County Jail

Sheriff Moose Butler promoted Maj. John McRainey to the top position Monday.

"We feel today that we are happy to have John as the new chief jailer of the Cumberland County Detention Center," Butler said.

McRainey said his main goal is to limit jailers' mistakes. Since the new jail opened more than a year ago, there has been a sex scandal, two suicides and six inmates freed by mistake.

"I am the first one to say we made human errors. It was not the facility's," Butler said. "We have one of the best facilities in the state right here."

McRainey replaces Dan Ford who is no longer with the jail. He has since joined the Services Department, working with courthouse security and the sheriff office's fleet of cars.
