RALEIGH, N.C. — A man who dodged prison once may not get another chance.

In 1999, then-Gov. Jim Hunt tossed out the two life sentences that Kwame Cannon received for six counts of first-degree burglary. Hunt called the punishment too harsh.

Wednesday, Cannon was sentenced to probation for three misdemeanor charges, including assaulting his wife.

Gov. Mike Easley has to decide whether the 35-year-old will return to prison.
