Warm winter brings early termite problems

Exterminators say the mild winter has resulted in increased service requests about swarming termites.

DURHAM, N.C. — Termites – those tiny bugs that look like white ants – play a very important role in the ecosystem, but many homeowners know them as pests that can cause extensive damage to homes and other buildings.

Exterminators say the mild winter has resulted in increased service requests about swarming termites.

"People will wake up in the morning and have thousands of termites inside the house," said Jess Rehm with Triangle Pest Control.

Most pest control companies will do a free inspection of homes for termite problems. If they find a problem, the cost for treatment can start at approximately $1,000.

Rehm says it's not cheap, but it is a small price to pay.

"They do a ton of damage, and if they're on your house for a long time, they can lead you to even bigger expenses," Rehm said.

Experts with the state of North Carolina estimate that more than $2 billion is spent each year to control or prevent termite infestation.
