People posing as police rob Benson, Fayetteville drivers
People posing as police officers have robbed two drivers in the past two days near Benson and in Fayetteville, but authorities say there is no indication the two case are connected.
Posted — UpdatedThe first robbery happened Sunday night on Interstate 40 near Benson, where a driver said someone in a black Ford Crown Victoria with flashing blue lights pulled him over and stole his cash.
On Monday, two people posing as officers robbed a Fayetteville woman driving home from work around 10:50 p.m.
Keionta Hinton, an assistant manager at Church’s Chicken, told police she was heading down Yadkin Road to deposit some money from the restaurant. A blue Crown Victoria with flashing blue lights on the dashboard pulled in behind her and stopped her on Santee Drive, she said.
Two men got out of the car, and one put a gun in her face and stole the restaurant's money, according to police.
When asked where the men got police blue lights, Fayetteville police spokesman Gavin MacRoberts said "that's a question we'd like to answer."
Drivers being pulled over by an unmarked vehicle with flashing blue lights can call 911 to confirm that police are involved, authorities said. Drivers should activate their hazard lights and pull into a well-lit area.
"Whenever you have an incident like this, it destroys the trust police officers have with their community," MacRoberts said.
