Two children died Sunday in Halifax County when the vehicle in which they were riding with their baby sitter ended up in a creek.
The accident happened when a car ran into a guardrail on Rockhouse Road near Littleton and then crashed into a creek. Killed in the wreck Sunday were Alana Liles, 9, and Elizabeth Laureano, 7, said Highway Patrol Sgt. A.W. Wilson. Another child in the car, 13-year-old Samantha West, was critically injured and is at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Liles and Laureano were students at Vaughn Elementary School in Warren County.
Amanda Milton, 20, of Littleton, lost control of the Chevrolet she was driving and struck the abutment of a wooden bridge, turning the car upside down and sending it into a creek, Wilson said. Milton suffered minor injuries.
Young men on all-terrain vehicles who heard the crash rushed to the scene and used winches to partially pull the car from the water. It was not clear how long the victims were in the water.
"We heard what happened and rushed down here and started helping them out," said Joshua Shearin, one of the rescuers.
When they arrived, Milton was screaming for help.
"We finally got the door wedged open and pulled the first girl out and cut her seat belt," said Chase Fleming. "We couldn't get the other two (out) because the car was crushed in the back."
