Two People Seriously Injured In Durham Wreck

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Two people were seriously injured when a car and a pickup truck collided Friday morning on U.S. 70 West between Lynn Road and East End Avenue.

The accident happened at 10:48 a.m. An eastbound 1998 Honda Civic driven by Antonio Mendoza Del Plan, 26, of South LaSalle Street crossed the center and slid sideways into the path of a westbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driven by Johnny Hearn, 46, of Valleydale Drive.

The impact caused the Tacoma to go off the right side of the road, overturn and come to rest on its passenger side.

Hearn and his wife, Carol, were taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. They both were wearing seat belts.

Del Plan was not injured.

Officers believe the Honda driver may have swerved to avoid another vehicle -- possibly a white Dodge.

Del Plan was charged with providing fictitious information to officers. No other charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation is continuing.

The accident was not weather-related, and speed and alcohol were not factors.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Durham police Investigator C.M. Rodriques at

560-4314.
