Clayton woman hit, killed while walking along highway

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Kasie Leigh Moore was walking in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 70 north of Clayon when she was hit around 3 a.m.

Authorities said that their initial investigation found that speed was not a factor in the crash and said that the SUV's driver will not be charged.

Investigators haven't said what led to the wreck, but Charlie Dobbins, Moore's college softball coach at William Peace University in Raleigh, said family members told him that she had gotten into an argument with her twin sister and had gotten out of the car to walk home.

When she wouldn't get back in, he said, the sister left.

"I can’t imagine what’s she’s feeling," Dobbins said. "There was no way you could predict that something like that was going to happen."

Family members did not want to talk Friday.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said it had received reports of a woman walking in the roadway but that the SUV had already hit Moore by the time deputies arrived.

Moore was a 2011 graduate of William Peace, where she was captain of the school's softball team. She graduated in 2007 from Clayton High School, where she also played softball and basketball.

"She was the kind of person that motivated people," Dobbins said.

Dobbins described her as an "outstanding student" who graduated with nearly a 4.0 GPA. Moore also had plans to attend law school.

"(She was) a vivacious young lady, a kid full of life, loving the world, having fun," he said. "Unfortunately, she's gone way too soon."
