Clutching a stuffed animal, 2-year-old Mariah Poland made the final steps of her journey from Rocky Mount to Richmond, Va., and then back to Rocky Mount in the arms of a police officer.
Authorities said the child was in her mother's 1994 teal-green Honda Accord in the parking lot of Cousins Food Mart on West Ridge Street in Rocky Mount early Tuesday when a man jumped into the car and drove away.
Hours later, a Richmond police officer later spotted the car and found Poland still strapped in her car seat. Authorities said she was unharmed.
Police said Amy Calvin, the girl's mother, had left the car running with her daughter inside while she stuck her head inside the convenience store at about 1 a.m. to inquire about some cardboard boxes. The family is in the process of moving.
Authorities have not made any arrests in the case, but authorities are looking for two people in connection with it: the assailant, a black man last seen wearing a black toboggan cap, a dark heavy jacket and black jeans, and a woman identified as Latesha Louis. It was not immediately clear
