CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A five-car crash early Friday afternoon caused traffic delays on westbound Interstate 40 in Orange and Durham counties.

Only minor injuries were reported in the accident. The driver who initiated the crash was charged with exceeding safe speed in traffic and failure to reduce speed to avoid colliding with another vehicle.

Traffic was backed up for several miles to the Fayetteville Road exit in Durham County as emergency personnel cleared the wreck. As of 4:45 p.m., residual delays were still observed in the area.
