Police said Stephen Satisky, 58, is suspected of shooting Lance Cpl. John Lake III, 22, in the head early Monday morning in a parking lot on Bragg Boulevard. Lake is hospitalized in critical condition.
Satisky served on the Fayetteville City Council in the 1970s. He was a reserve deputy with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office in the 1990s, and he is licensed to carry a concealed weapon.
Satisky has owned a local pawnshop for years, and he is a member of Fayetteville's Downtown Alliance. Other downtown business owners were shocked by the events.
"He's one of the last people I'd ever think would be in trouble with guns," said business owner Paul Simon.
Besides being known in the business community, Satisky volunteered on the board of Fayetteville Urban Ministries for 15 years, helping with things like fundraisers and financial planning. Volunteers say their next meeting is Thursday, but they haven't heard from Satisky.
"We're praying for the Marine and for Steve," said Ken Lancaster with Fayetteville Urban Ministries.
Police won't speculate on a motive in the shooting. Satisky's attorney told WRAL that his client is suffering from a blow to the head himself.
Satisky was unavailable for comment. He has not been charged with any crime.
