Duke Health System To Provide Services In New North Hills Development

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Duke University Health System will expand its presence in Wake County with a primary care office that will be part of the development in North Raleigh known as The Cardinal at North Hills.

The Cardinal will be a continuing-care retirement community. Kane Realty Corporation and Drucker & Falk, LLC, are developing the project, which will cost an estimated $150 million.

The residential complex will include 370 units. Construction is expected to begin next year.

Kane Realty led the redevelopment of the new North Hills and other properties along the Six Forks corridor just north of the I-440 Beltline.

“We believe that this collaboration between three strong local forces will set the standard in Raleigh for continuing-care retirement communities,” said John Kane, chairman and chief executive officer of Kane Realty, in a statement. “Not only has Duke committed to providing these services at The Cardinal once it’s up and operating, but their team has also been involved in all aspects of the development process, including planning and layout of their services and interaction with the regulatory agencies.”

Duke owns the nearby Duke Health Raleigh Hospital on Wake Forest Road. It was known formerly as Raleigh Community Hospital.

“As John Kane has said, we are one stoplight away,” a Duke Health Raleigh Hospital spokesperson said. Residents will have full access to services provided by the Raleigh hospital as well as Duke Health’s main complex in Durham, she added.

The Cardinal will include primary care and wellness centers at a Duke Center for Living. The facility will have primary care staff on site and provide home health care. Access to continuing education programs and hospice services also will be available to Cardinal residents.

Two other Duke Center for Living facilities are already in operation, one at Duke University and the other at Galloway Ridge in Chatham County, a Drucker & Falk project.

“Duke Health Raleigh is excited and pleased to work with representatives from Kane Realty Corporation and Drucker & Falk to bring Duke services directly to The Cardinal residents”, said Doug Vinsel, Duke Health Raleigh Hospital’s CEO.

The Cardinal will offer choices of independent living or assisted living as well as skilled nursing care.

“Our experience with Duke at Galloway Ridge showed us firsthand what the connection to the Duke name means to CCRC residents both in terms of the development process and the value of the services Duke brings,” said David Falk, Jr., of Drucker & Falk.
