Plane Diverted To RDU After Reporting Smoke In Cockpit

MORRISVILLE, N.C. — A Continental Airlines flight headed toBogota, Colombia from New Jersey made an emergency landing at RDU International Wednesday evening after the crew reported smoke in the cockpit.

Continental Flight 881 was enroute to Bogota when the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit and a possible engine fire. The 757, with 149 passengers and crew members, was diverted to RDU.

The plane landed without incident just before 5:30 p.m; no one was reported injured.

There were no flames visible inside the plane or outside as it was pulled into a gate near the runway. An RDU emergency vehicle followed behind the plane.

The passengers de-planed and Continental made arrangements for another plane to take them to Colombia. That flight left RDU around 1:15 a.m.

Continental is investigating the incident.
