Another Inmate Mistakenly Released From Cumberland Jail

Posted Updated

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — According to authorities, jailers in Cumberland County freed a man they were supposed to lock up.

Last week, Shakeem Vanager finished a sentence in a state prison. He was then brought to the Cumberland County Jail because he faced other charges, but jail employees could not find the paperwork and they released him.

Ultimately, Harnett County actually found the paperwork and Cumberland County deputies took Vanager back into custody.

An internal investigation of the jail is pending. It marks the fourth time an inmate was mistakenly released since the jail opened in February.
