Robeson Drive-By Shooting Claims Life Of 11-Year-Old

LUMBERTON, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting that killed a 11-year-old girl.

Investigators say 11-year-old Nicole Oxendine was asleep in her relative's trailer late Monday night in Robeson County, south of Lumberton when someone in a white Sedan shot into the window of the trailer at least six times.

One of the shots hit Oxendine in the head. She died at the scene.

"I can't understand why somebody would kill her," said Yvonne Locklear, Oxendine's aunt. "[It's] terrible, terrible, especially when you go in the house and see all the blood in that bed and know that she was asleep and somebody came through and did that to her."

Neighbors in the area are also stunned about Oxendine's death, especially those with children of their own.

"I thought about, 'Man, what if this happened to us or something.' Yeah, it's scary," neighbor Leigh Gomez said.

Authorities say So far, investigators do not have any suspects in the case. They are not sure if it was a random shooting or if someone inside the home was the target.
