Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police are trying to determine the identity of skeletal remains that were found Thursday by a city employee.

According to police, the remains were found around 2 p.m. across the street from a cemetery at the dead end of Brinkley Street.

Investigators said that, based on the clothing, the remains are believed to be male. They will be sent to the Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

Detectives said they are treating the case as a homicide unless evidence or the autopsy indicates otherwise. They said they will follow up on missing-persons cases and check with other law enforcement agencies that have open missing-persons cases.
