Sanford Police Investigate Abduction, Murder, Suicide At Community College

Sanford police said the gunman burst into a campus building, grabbed a woman, dragged her into nearby woods and fatally shot her. He then shot himself and died at the hospital.

It was just before 2 p.m. Monday when 31-year-old Greg Schultz burst into the fitness building at Central Carolina Community College. Witnesses said he grabbed 23-year-old student Rosa Speagle, pushed her through the parking lot and into some woods.

School Vice President Ron Miriello had just pulled into the parking lot. He saw -- and heard -- it all.

"He was pushing her," Miriello said. "He had her by the arms and was pushing her through the woods and going up a hill. When they reached the top of the hill. . . I heard three shots, and that was it."

Police said that after Schultz shot and killed Speagle, he ran a short distance and then shot himself. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

While all that was unfolding, the college was placed on lockdown -- no one allowed in or out until police determined it was safe.

Police also notified Lee County High School just down the road. But they said no one there was ever in any danger.

There still has been no official motive given by police. A college staff member told WRAL that Schultz was Speagle's ex-boyfriend.

Witnesses said they heard three shots -- two together and then one a few minutes later.

Speagle leaves behind a young child.
