TONIGHT AT 11: Special Report Shows How Virtual Reality Helps Overcome Real Fear

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — For a lot of people, elevators are a convenient way to get where they are going. But elevators used to be Dawn Tripp's worst nightmare.

"It felt like if you went in, you wouldn't get out," Tripp said.

Tripp did not ride an elevator for 17 years.

One day, she had a luncheon all the way at the top of the Progress Energy building in Raleigh.

"I was dressed in heels, and I actually walked 21 floors up," she said. "I knew then: 'I've got to get over this phobia.'"

That is when she heard about the virtual reality program at Duke. She gave it a try, and now her fear is gone.
