KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A political newcomer has made history in Knightdale.

Mayor-elect Doug Boyd is the first African American to hold the seat.

Boyd won the election with no political experience.

"The mentality is that you've got to be on the planning board to run for council before you can be mayor. I've done none of those things. But over my career, I've done many things equivalent to those jobs. So, I've got the qualifications," he said.

Boyd currently works for the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety as the branch manager for Homeland Security. He credits hard work and supporters for his success.
