Granville Teacher Receives National Award

Posted Updated

OXFORD, N.C. — It was like a moment right out of the Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes for a teacher in Granville County Thursday.

Chris Monte is one of two teachers in North Carolina named a 2003 Milken Foundation National Educator. Recipients receive a $25,000 award.

The award is dubbed the "Oscar of Teaching," and is given to 100 teachers nationwide each year.

Monte teaches history and coaches soccer at J.F. Webb High School in Oxford.

The school's principal was the only one in on the surprise.
