FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Cumberland County jailer has been fired for twice wrongly releasing an inmate.
In July, Sergeant James Burgess mistakenly relased a man with the same name as a prisoner set to be released.
A month later, after returning from a brief suspension, Burgess inadvertently released a different inmate following a paperwork error. He again was suspended.
Both prisoners eventually turned themselves back in.
The 52-year-old Burgess was fired Monday, according to Cumberland County Sheriff Moose Butler. Burgess had worked for the county as a jailer for nine years.
