DURHAM, N.C. — A 19-month-old child who was struck by a van while playing in a parking lot Tuesday night died Wednesday afternoon at Duke University Medical Center.

Joshua Bass suffered serious head injuries after the accident in the parking lot of a housing complex on Wiggins Street. He was admitted to Duke in critical condition.

According to police, a church van driven by Toney McClammy of Rhyn Court had pulled into the parking lot to pick up Bass' cousin to go to a church program.

McClammy backed the van into a space in front of the cousin's apartment, but was told the cousin would not be attending the program.

As McClammy pulled out of the parking space, the van struck Bass, who was playing in the parking lot. McClammy told investigators he did not see the child.

Investigators said the van, which is owned by New Covenant United Holy Church, was not going fast when the accident occurred.

No charges have been filed. The accident remains under investigation.
