Easley Joins Fight Against Proposed Navy Airfield

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — First, Washington County took on the U.S. Navy. Now, Gov. Mike Easley is joining the fight.

Easley sent a letter to the Navy secretary, opposing a plan to build a runway near Plymouth.

The Navy said it needs the site for F-18 fighter jets to practice takeoffs and landings.

However, Washington County residents and Easley said the noise and environmental impact would devastate the area. They also point to the impact it would have on a nearby wildlife refuge.
