Fayetteville, N.C. — A state trooper who was shot during a traffic stop in Cumberland County will be returning to duty Friday.
On November 28, 2005, Trooper John Horniak stopped a vehicle on Interstate 95 in Cumberland County because the car's license plate that was not properly secured.
Authorities said Marvin Johnson got out of the vehicle to retrieve his operator's license from the trunk of the car. While walking to the trunk of his vehicle, investigators said Johnson shot Horniak five times.
Horniak was able to return to his patrol car and requested help. Johnson was later arrested at a Fayetteville motel.
