Officers responded to a domestic call at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday at a home in Lillington. When they arrived, they found 31-year-old Cecil Poythress with a stab wound from a steak knife, police said.
Cecil Poythress, a popular barber in Raleigh and Harnett County, died on his way to a hospital.
Police charged Poythress's wife, 32-year-old Stephanie Poythress, with his death. She is being held in the Harnett County Jail without bond.
Stephanie Poythress called 911 Thursday night, asking for an ambulance.
"My husband, he's been cut," she told the dispatcher.
"Where's he been cut?" the dispatcher asked.
"In the heart," Poythress responded. "I mean, in the chest."
Stephanie Poythress resigned from the Harnett County Sheriff's Office in August 2004 after eight years of service.
Police said two children were in the house at the time of the slaying. They were taken to the Department of Social Services and later placed with their grandmother.
The incident is the first homicide in Lillington in more than a decade, police said.
