Police: Driver Runs Over Man During Parking-Lot Fight

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — One man was killed and another arrested after a vehicle ran over a man involved in a parking-lot brawl outside of a Fayetteville night club early Saturday morning, police said.

According to police, the incident began in the parking lot of "The Place" in Fayetteville around 4 a.m. Saturday, when a number of people began fighting. In the midst of the altercation, the vehicle drove through the crowd, ran over a man who was fighting and then backed up over him again, police said.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, died later from his injuries.

Police arrested Kenneth Gerber, 39, of Fayetteville, and charged him with driving while impaired. Gerber, who told police he didn't know he ran over anyone, was in the Cumberland County Jail on Saturday.

The incident remains under investigation, and police do not yet know if further charges will be filed in the case.

They also do not yet know if the fatal collision was intentional or accidental.
