CARY, N.C. — A popular shopping center near a Cary golf course community isn't the only place being considered for a Costco store.

Jeff Brotman, co-founder of the wholesale club, said Monday that his company is looking at other locations in town besides the west corner of U.S. Highway 1/64 where the MacGregor Village shopping center sits.

A future site for a store, Brotman said, is "wide open." He would not say what other locations are possible.

The plan to build on U.S. 1/64 has received mixed reaction. Some residents of the nearby MacGregor Downs golf course community said they do not believe the store fits with the rest of the area.

Others do not want to see the shopping center replaced.

Costco has submitted a preliminary application to town planners to build a store, but it must also submit a formal site plan. That review process is about four to five months.

If the plan is approved, a Cary Costco would be the second such store in Wake County and the sixth in the state.
