Fayetteville Officer Cleared In Fatal Shooting

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing in a shooting death last November, officials said Wednesday.

Officer Bart Suggs pulled 34-year-old Calvin Wilson over during a routine traffic stop on Seneca Drive on Nov. 4. As he approached the car, he noticed Wilson had a weapon, police said.

After issuing several warnings to drop the weapon, Suggs fired at Wilson and wounded him, police said. Wilson died later at Cape Fear Valley Hospital.

The State Bureau of Investigation examined the incident and turned its findings over to the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office, which determined there was no basis for criminal charges against Suggs, officials said.

Suggs will remain on administrative duty until the Fayetteville Police Department completes its internal investigation of the case, officials said.
