Gun-Wielding Man Roams Through Durham School

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities are searching for a man videotaped carrying a gun and walking through the halls of a Durham elementary school early Sunday evening.

Durham County sheriff's investigators said the unidentified man broke into Glenn Elementary School on East Greer Street at about 6:38 p.m. by shooting out a side door's glass with a 12-gauge shotgun that deputies said was stolen from a nearby community center.

One surveillance video shows the intruder apparently breaking into the school and walking down a long hallway. Another video captured the man walking in what appears to be a lobby area. Two other video clips show the individual walking outside the school building.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, Durham Public Schools officials said the school system over the past several years has taken significant steps to improve its security systems and are working with investigators to "ensure a swift capture of this or any individual who would trespass on our campuses."

Classes for Durham Public Schools begin Aug. 25.
