This Saturday, the Roanoke Rapids outdoor theatre will rock to Christian music led by Steven Curtis Chapman. Chapman has sold nearly 10 million records during his career, and local ministers said the concert is sure to attract church groups from all over the Roanoke Valley.
"I know that we are trying our best to get as involved as can be and to get as many people out there as possible," said Sean Wilson, youth pastor at the First Christian Church.
Rev. David Schmaltz of Emmanuel Workshop Center is expecting his church members to show up.
"Not only for the entertainment value, of course it will be, but also Christian bands tend to come into an area and leave a deposit of their message," said Schmaltz.
The event will also give local gospel groups, like the Musical Disciples, room to show their talents.
"We are from the old school, as they say, and we do the traditional gospel even though we do a contemporary song here and there," said Robert Jones of the Musical Disciples.
The event is alcohol-free. Judging from early ticket sales, organizers can expect local churches to pack the seats.
"We had a certain level of tickets to sell, and I know we exceeded that," said Wilson.
The next country concert at Carolina Crossroads is scheduled for Sept. 23, with Hank Williams Jr. Officials said tickets are selling fast.
