The four-year grant will help the two research centers to develop strategies to individualize breast cancer treatment for patients. The grant is in honor of Jamie Valvano Howard, the daughter of V Foundation founder Jim Valvano. Howard was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago.
"The V Foundation board of directors decided to establish this grant in honor of Jamie to develop a model program that The V Foundation will be able to replicate throughout the country," said Nick Valvano, the foundation's chief executive. "We hope this project will play a role in shaping how future breast cancer patients will be diagnosed and treated."
The project will assist the studies of Dr. Charles Perou of UNC and Dr. Joseph Nevins of Duke. Perou has focused on patients with unlikely prognoses and with hereditary breast cancers, while Nevins' studies have enabled physicians to select the right anti-cancer drugs for each patient.
