Still No Suspects In Alleged Nightclub Assault Involving UNC Athletes

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Chapel Hill police are talking to several UNC football players about an alleged assault at a nightclub, but say they still have no suspects.

Michael Reaves and a friend allege a group of people, including members of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's football team, assaulted them inside the downtown nightclub Club Avalon on July 9.

Reaves, whose face was bruised and jaw broken in two places, and his friend, Christopher Alston, were treated at UNC Hospitals for their injuries and later released.

The two claim the fight started over a spilled drink.

The incident was the latest in a wave of violence in the downtown Chapel Hill area. The same night that Reaves and Alston say they were attacked, police also responded to a fight outside the same club where shots were also fired. A week earlier, police said, a person was shot outside a nearby nightclub, Club Chi-Hi.
