ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the affairs of a missing attorney for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board.
Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall requested the financial crimes division launch an investigation into John G. McCormick, who has not been seen since last week.
Investigators found a vehicle registered to McCormick's family abandoned at an entrance to Duke Forest. Authorities said he disappeared at about the same time the North Carolina Bar Association froze his business accounts after McCormick allegedly failed to transfer more than $800,000 from real-estate sales to the property's owner.
Court documents showed $1.3 million in McCormick's attorney- client trust is missing.
Woodall will decide whether to file criminal charges after the SBI completes its investigation.
