Grandmother Victim Of Apparent Drowning At Lake Wheeler

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A family reunion at Lake Wheeler on Saturday ended with an apparent drowning, Raleigh police said on Sunday, when a grandmother wandered away from her relatives.

Two fishermen found the body of Annette Garnett, 74, of Carrollton, Md., along the shoreline at about 10:30 a.m.

Garnett's body was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Investigators said Garnett was among more than 200 family members at a gathering at the lake and that there had been some miscommunication among family members about who was taking care of her.

It was not until Sunday morning that family members realized Garnett was missing.

It was not immediately clear whether Garnett suffered from any medical conditions, and if so, whether they might have contributed to the apparent drowning.
