The material, sealed in a portable moisture density gauge, was stored in a locked steel transport box attached to the bed of a white 2006 Dodge Dakota with license plate number
VV2525
with the letters "APAC" painted on the doors.
The truck was stolen early Saturday morning, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources said.
The gauge, contained in a yellow plastic shipping container about the size of a footlocker at the time of its disappearance, poses no immediate health or safety threat unless it is handled improperly or opened. It was clearly marked as containing radioactive material.
Authorities are asking that anyone who might come in contact with the gauge to maintain a distance of at least 10 feet away and to call their local law enforcement agency or 911.
APAC Atlanta Inc., the company from which the gauge was stolen, is offering a $1,000 reward for the return of the sealed source.
