Trooper In Serious Crash Leaves Hospital

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham N.C. State Highway Patrol trooper who was nearly killed in a high-speed chase months ago left the hospital on Friday.

Jerry Brand hasn't been home since March. He proudly -- although slowly -- walked out of the facility Friday morning. WRAL asked Brand what he wanted to do first when he got home.

"I'm going to sit in my leather reclining chair -- it's a comfortable chair that me and my son fight over," Brand said. "I'm going to get out of my walker and sit down into my chair -- and that's the first thing I'm going to do."

Brand is headed home to Greensboro to continue his recovery. His legs were crushed in an accident in early March.

The trooper was chasing a suspect in Durham County when he lost control of the car. The engine ended up across the street from the crash site.

Brand told WRAL Friday he feels blessed and is happy to be going home.
