According to the
Chapel Hill Police Department
, two officers represented themselves as members of a Cyber Crimes Task Force of the FBI. The alleged actions took place during an investigation into a reported computer hacking at Chapel Hill High School May 2.
In an article published in the
Independent Weekly
, a female student claimed two men wearing FBI shirts presented a business card with FBI lettering and questioned her about the suspected computer hacking. The student believed the men were FBI agents, even though the address on the business card is that of the Chapel Hill Police Department.
"The allegations are disturbing," police chief Gregg Jarvies said. "Certainly what's alleged and what's been published raises concerns abot the integrity of the department and we rely on that integrity for the public to trust us."
The officers who responded to the school on that day do not work for the FBI nor are they assigned to the FBI's Cyber Crime Task Force, according to the Police Department.
The officers are on paid leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. A third officer is on paid leave as part of the investigation, but is not accused of posing as an FBI agent.
