A Durham employee was robbed while making a bank deposit; a Cary employee was robbed after returning from the bank.
Police said they believe the same men are behind the two hold-ups. The only thing throwing them off is two different cars were used in the robberies.
The first armed robbery happened in Durham around 9:30 a.m at the Wachovia Bank on the corner of University and Shannon.
Police said employees from a nearby Boston Market restaurant were making a deposit when two men in a white minivan pulled up beside them. Police said one suspect allegedly sprayed the workers with pepper spray before grabbing their bag of money.
Six hours later in Cary there was a second attack. It happened at 3:15 p.m. behind the Jimmy V's Steak House at the MacGregor Village Shopping Center in Cary.
Police said the manager had just returned from making a bank deposit when two men in a black car came out of nowhere.
"The black male smashed out the window with a tire iron. After that, he reached into the door, pulled her out, sprayed her with pepper spray, then took the deposit bag," said Sgt. Randy Sparrow of the Cary Police Department.
Investigators believe both hits are the work of the same men.
"I think it was a crime of opportunity and being at the wrong place at the wrong time," Sparrow said.
Officers are working with victims to come up with a composite sketch.
